How to Care for Bamboo Cutting Board

More people are choosing bamboo or wooden kitchenware over plastic ones, mainly for safety and environment protection. But something we might be getting wrong is that we think plastic boards have a longer lifespan than bamboo ones. Actually, with proper care, a bamboo board can be used for years. This is exactly what we're about to explore today.

Why use bamboo cutting boards over other materials

1.Higher Hardness

Compared to other materials, bamboo boards are less prone to scratches when cutting, which is kinda important cause scratches are where bacteria grow. The hardness of bamboo also prevents damage and ensures a longer use. So if there are the elderly or children in the family. It is recommended to use bamboo kitchenware and cutlery for them.

2.Less exposure to chemicals

The fact is, cutting boards are used to cut our everyday food . Material safety is therefore particularly important. Plastic cutting boards are thought to be unhealthy in the long run. While bamboo & wooden cutting boards are safer for being natural.

3.Longer service life

A good bamboo cutting board with proper care can stay in service for years (for almost everyday use) without any mold or cracking. This is barely possible for any other material-made boards. And we'd be getting into the “how to care for it to prolong its lifespan” problem later.

How to care for bamboo boards

1. Disinfection before use

Be sure to do disinfection before use - soak it in the boiling water to kill germs, rinse it and dry it naturally (don't dry it through direct sunlight cause it might crack the bamboo);

2. Keep it hydrated and away from corrosion

Soak it in salty water for a period of time to keep it keep it hydrated (preventing the bamboo from cracking due to dryness). Then cover the cutting board with edible oil as antiseptic. This sounds a bit weird but it is probably the most efficient way to protect bamboo from corrosion;

3.Stay out of direct sunlight

As mentioned before, long exposure directly to fierce sunlight might crack the bamboo, especially for those naturally made ones (without any glues).

4. Prevent cracking from thermal expansion & contraction

Drill a small hole in the middle of it, about 5 to 10 mm in diameter, and plug the hole with a small wooden strip. This is to prevent cracking due to thermal expansion and contraction.
